Collaborative enterprise project : Feedback Needed

One of my contacts is progressing on the HR component of a corporate project. He lauched some projects, initiatives and would like to exchange about it with people with similar experciences in order to share best practices, idees and make headway together.

Here’s his request.

Hi,
I am managing a programme called Alstom collaborative Way. I’d like to get a dialogue about it. Today, tools exist for and success stories are already starting to come through.
Today the next steps is to manage organizational enablers and blockers and identify how to best capture the benefits of collaborative ways of working. So, feel free to suggest your answers and comments on how to do this.
Alstom is a leader in Power and Transport sector (76,000 people in 70 countries). The programme “Alstom Collaborative Way” aims to enhance employees’ collaborative ways of working by integrating in their practices the use of communities of practice, networks and collaborative information systems. Its goal is to provide means to facilitate, reward and favour the Search, Sharing and Connection between people and between data
The steps of the programme have been: First provide building blocks for a collaborative working environment* for Early adopters and Pilots (see above the 3 “building blocks”). Extract from this tangible proof of business value and take stock on needs for change in order to ensure organizational support of collaborative ways of working. Lastly, pull for the alignment of organizational policies and processes, culture, IT and people management tools.
Example component of the “collaborative working environment”
A policy that sets the Frame for governance and golden rules
A portfolio of IT collaborative tools (“Web 2.0.) such as: Blog, Wiki, Search engines, RSS, document-sharing solutions, Intenal Yellow pages.
Alstom University training content and assessment are aligned to ensure learning is also done through peer-to-peer coaching or exchange of knowledge and creates networking opportunities.
Toolkits to animate small and large meetings in a collaborative way (Open space, Fishbowl, best practice-Marketplace, Cafezhino, Knowledge café, 4-game brainstorming workshopTM).

Using wikis as a coaching tool

wikipediaI’ve already writen someting about blogs as a self development tool, now this is wiki as a coaching tool [fr]. You can also find things in English here.

It’s a very interesting concept because it :

- it favors the adoption of a new tool

- it suggests the idea that there people can find a new way for an easy collaboration

- it allows concerned people to organize their collaboration by themselves.

- it allwos a quick evaluation by the particpants who can easily see they quickly came to an interesting result.

- it favors the emergence of a culture of exchange in the organization.

We now have feed back[fr] on a coaching session based on “wikipedia raid”.

So what happened (translation of the post in short)

  • Context :
    • a group of people who’ve been working together for 3 days, who are easy the ones whith the others
    • they know and they are used to goup efficiency techniques and tools
  • The exercise :
    • You have 2H30 to organize yourselves in groups
    • You have tho produce and publish on Wikipedia a “quite perfect” article on a defined subject.

At the beginning the group was hesitating :

  • Emergence of subgroups
  • Discussions, disagreements
  • Isolated initiatives

Then the group started producing

  • a series of short posts
  • that were independant but linkable
  • and that he aggregated in a 3 web pages document

At the end they provided quite a good entry on wikipedia on a subject that have nearly been treated before.

The group was satisfied because they successed in the allowed time and the result is public and published on wikipedia.

The observation of group member’s behaviours, attitudes and discussions about regulation was also very interesting.

I see two interesting points:

- evolution of team practices

- getting used with a new kind of tools.

I also had a comment from the consultant that made this session : people didn’t know anything about wikis before, they liked it and they suggested to use it at work. But IT department doesn’t like this kind of proposal at all ;-)

Blogs as a self development tool

images.jpegSome people say that blogging is a kind of therapy for them…for most of the it helped them fighting againts shyness since they can express their ideas and expose themselves to public opinion. If their posts meet success they are strenghtened and then they dare more and more…

I was asking myself if, for example, blog based intranets could have the same effect and could improve self-development in an organization. Listening to others, collaborating, daring, asserting oneself in a group, being closer to employees, showing the human side of a manager….those problematics are very important in companies today and, as web 2.0 tools are deeply human driven I think  such intranets, in addition to facilitating communication, discussion, KM and collective intelligence could help HR in their self-development projects.

For example I’m convinced that blogging could be a first step to improve self-confidence, to dare to speak and share one’s ideas.

I think I’ll have to digg deeper this subject…perharps we have here another  significant contribution of intranets 2.0 as real people-centric tools.
