Enterprise 2.0 : no big things but a lot of little steps

There’s not a week without a publication about knowing what”the next big thing” will be. We know that enterprise 2.0 is rather a complex thing according to the diversity and multiplicity of means. But I’m not sure that considering only “big things” will be a good thing.

First I’m not sure enterprises really like “big things” since they mainly understand “big changes”. The best way not to make an enterprise change is to talk about revolutionizing things.

Of course we can also say that Taylor really revolutionized enterprises at the industrial era and that since we’re changing era, another revolution is needed. But I’m not sure Taylor wanted a revolution.

Taylor set up a method from which were drawn some conclusions wich impacted a lot of local things in the enterprise. And, as a conclusion, decades later, with hindsight, people said “wow ! what a revolution”. I’m almost convinced that most of enterprises wouldn’t have tried changing anything if they knew the real extent of the final change. They were only improving a lot a little things and at the end….

In fact we have not to mistake between the means and the result. The means are a lot of small improvements. The result will perharps be a revolution…or not. We will only know it in a few years. But what’s important for us today is those numerous “little step”.

Small steps are really the better way to change, the only way to favor adoption reassuring organization and people.
