Big Data is not the privilege of IT anymore, Forrester says

As any new technology, Big Data entered organizations in a chaotic way, starting, of course, with IT departments. As a consequence, businesses face lots of internal initiatives with very little coherence and, in the end, the advent of new silos of data, what is the exact opposite of the pursued goal.

A recent Forrester study rreviews the current situation and gives insights to build an enterprise Big Data strategy.

It says that, if IT is still be biggest user of Big Data, operations and corporate functions are using it more and more. Most of all finance and marketing. HR seem to left behind.

The main takes of the study are :

• Big Data does not rely on a single technology, a data swiss army knife but on various ones depending on the purpose.

• Big Data is not limited to some specific use cases : it can be used for an infinity of things in all business areas. But the multiplication of use cases must not lead to chaotic, isolated and uncoordinated strategies.

• There’s a need for Big Data enterprise wide strategies and long-term planning to avoid silos.

• Big Data can be deployed either top-down (technology driven) or bottom-up (business driven) but a balance has to be found between both approaches for better coordination.
